Description and Rationale

Hepatic-Aid® II Instant Drink is a dietary supplement which contains essential and non-essential amino acids, carbohydrates and fats in a readily digestible form. It is specifically formulated to provide a palatable supplement to the diet of patients with chronic liver disease. Compared to dietary protein, Hepatic-Aid® II Instant Drink has an amino acid composition, which is high in branched-chain amino acids and low in aromatic amino acids and methionine.

When prepared full strength, Hepatic-Aid® II Instant Drink has an osmolality of approximately 560 mOsmol/Kg (osmolality 460 mOsmol/liter).

Each serving contains less than 5 mEq of sodium. (Water used may contribute significantly to electrolyte load.)

Recommended Intake
In all cases, the quantity for consumption should be determined by nutritional requirements and the tolerance of glucose and protein for each patient. Usual intake of Hepatic-Aid® II Instant Drink is one to four packages per day, which provides approximately 15-60 g of amino acids and 340-1360 non-protein Kcal. Since manifestations of protein intolerance may be delayed for one week or more, intake should be advanced gradually to assure that each quantity is well tolerated.

As the patient continues to use Hepatic-Aid® II Instant Drink, which is essentially electrolyte-free, electrolyte supplementation may be required. Serum electrolyte concentrations must be monitored and supplementary electrolytes administered as required.

All patients receiving Hepatic-Aid® II Instant Drink as the principal source of nutrition should receive vitamin and mineral supplements.
